Privacy and your data

Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information BetweenActs collects, who processes it, how long it is kept, and how you may delete it. In summary: we keep your email address so that you can sign in, and the shows you log so that you can read them back. We do not sell your information and we do not use it for advertising, and you may delete all of it from inside the app, under Account and then Security.

1.Introduction

1.1Purpose of This Policy

This Privacy Policy describes the information that Bryght Ideas, LLC collects, uses, stores and shares in connection with BetweenActs, including the BetweenActs mobile application and this website, betweenacts.app. It also describes the choices and rights available to you.

This Privacy Policy should be read together with the BetweenActs Terms of Use.

1.2Data Controller

Bryght Ideas, LLC runs BetweenActs and is the data controller for your data. Our address is 2850 North Sheridan Road, Chicago, Illinois 60657, USA.

2.Definitions

2.1The Parties

In this Privacy Policy, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Bryght Ideas, LLC, 2850 North Sheridan Road, Chicago, Illinois 60657, USA.

“You” and “your” mean the individual who uses BetweenActs or who joins the waitlist on betweenacts.app. “Member” means any person who has an Account.

2.2The Service and Your Account

“BetweenActs” and “the Service” mean the BetweenActs mobile application and the website at betweenacts.app, which we operate.

“Account” means the account you create in order to use the Service.

2.3Content and Data

“Content” means everything you put into the Service, including diary entries, ratings, reviews, tags, rankings, lists, planned visits and photos.

“Your data” means the information that we hold about you, including your Account details and your Content.

2.4Service Providers

“Service Provider” means a third party, identified in section 7, that processes information in connection with the Service.

3.Information We Collect

3.1Account and Sign-In Information

To sign you in, we collect an email address. We collect a phone number only if you choose to add one so that your sign-in code can be sent to you by text.

There is no password. If you use a passkey, the key itself never leaves your device, and we see only that one exists.

You may also choose to sign in with Face ID or your fingerprint. Your face or fingerprint never leaves your phone: the phone's secure hardware makes a key, and Clerk keeps only the public half of that key, for that one phone. This is optional, and you may turn it off at any time under Account and then Security.

We also keep a copy of your sign-in email on your profile so that we can find your Account when you write to us. That copy is never shown to other members.

3.2Profile Information

Sign-up asks for a username, your first and last name, and the city you follow (New York or London). Your real name is never shown to other members.

Everything else is optional: a display name, a short bio, a location in your own words, a profile photo, a cover photo and up to three favorite shows.

Your profile also holds your settings, which are whether your profile is public and your notification choices. You may change any of this information later, and you may leave the optional parts blank.

3.3Content You Provide

We collect the Content that you put into the Service, which consists of:

  • the shows you log, the dates you saw them, your ratings, your written reviews, tags and spoiler warnings, your seat, which performance it was and its curtain time, and, for a touring show, the theater or city where you saw it;
  • your rankings, your lists and your Must See shows;
  • the visits you plan (date, seat, where your ticket is kept, and any note);
  • who you follow, the reviews you like, and any video channels you mute.

3.4Shows and Theaters Not Yet in the Catalogue

If you type in a show or theater that we do not carry yet, we keep what you typed (the title, the theater and the city) so that we can add it to the shared catalogue.

We also keep your look-ups, the Community nights and special events you log, and the shows you chose not to rank. Section 12 states how long each is kept.

3.5Camera, Photo Library and Location

The app asks for access to your photo library or camera only when you pick or take a photo. Those photos are a profile or cover photo, a photo of a program, or a photo on a show you logged or booked. Only the pictures you choose or take are uploaded.

The camera runs only when you tap to take a photo of a program or a show. Nothing is recorded, and the app never uses your microphone.

The app asks for your location only when you tap to find the tours nearest you. That location is rough, stays on your phone, and is used only to measure the distance to the cities in which we have tours. It is never sent to us and never stored.

3.6Device Information

The app notes your phone model, system version and app version on your profile, and on any feedback you send, so that we can fix problems. Section 12.2 lists exactly what is kept.

3.7Anonymous News Counts

We count how many times each news story is opened each day. The count does not record who opened the story.

3.8Information We Do Not Collect

We do not collect your contacts, your calendar, a history of where you go, or an advertising identifier. The app does not ask for any of them.

4.How We Use Information

4.1Providing the Service

We use the information described in section 3 to provide the Service that you have asked for. This includes signing you in and locating your Account, storing and displaying your diary, ratings, reviews, rankings, lists and planned visits, and showing your profile and Content to other members in accordance with your visibility settings (section 10).

It also includes comparing your rankings with those of other public members to show how closely your tastes match, calculating each show's audience score, and sending notifications in accordance with your notification choices.

4.2Supporting and Improving the Service

We use device information and crash reports to fix problems. We use the details of shows and theaters that you ask us to add to build the shared catalogue that all members use. We use AI as described in section 5.

4.3Use of Your Reviews

We do not read your reviews for profiling. Your reviews exist to be shown to the members to whom you have chosen to show them, and for no other purpose.

4.4What We Do Not Do

  • No advertising. There are no ads in the app and no plans for any.
  • No selling of your data. We do not sell it to advertisers, to data brokers, or to anybody.
  • No tracking SDKs. There is no analytics kit, no ad network, no third-party pixel and no cross-app tracking in the app. Sentry (section 7.6) is used for crashes and app speed, not to follow you. We do not ask for permission to track you because we do not track you.

The outside parties that can see what you do are YouTube, whenever a video player is open (section 8), Apple or Google, whenever the Stats map is open (section 7.7), and any website you open from the app (section 9).

5.How We Use Artificial Intelligence

5.1Purposes

We use AI to help build and run BetweenActs. We use it to help develop the app and to gather public information to fill in show details. We use it to write show synopses in our own words, so that we never copy someone else's writing and present it as ours.

5.2Program Scans and Show Requests

We also use AI when you scan a program or tell us about a show that we do not have. The AI helps us identify the show and check that its details are accurate.

For that purpose, your photo and the show details you give us are sent to AI model providers, and the models may read the photo to extract information. We do not send your name or your Account.

5.3Providers

The AI model providers are OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Google, reached through the Vercel AI Gateway. For web and image search we use Exa, and SerpApi with Google image search.

5.4No AI-Generated Images, Artwork or Video

We do not use AI to generate images, artwork or video, anywhere in the app. The show posters, artwork and videos that you see are the productions' own promotional and marketing materials.

5.5Team Approval

Every show and its details are approved by a member of the BetweenActs team before they are published.

6.Legal Bases for Processing (UK and EU)

6.1Bases on Which We Rely

Where UK or EU data protection law applies, we process your data on the following bases:

  • Contract: to run the Service that you asked for.
  • Legitimate interests: to keep the Service safe and to make it better.
  • Consent: where we ask you first, because you said yes.

7.How We Share Information (Service Providers)

7.1Overview

This section lists the Service Providers that process information in connection with the Service. It is the complete list.

We do not sell your data to anybody, and we do not hand it to anyone else except where the law requires it.

7.2Clerk (Sign-In)

Clerk handles sign-in. It sends your sign-in codes by email or text. Your email address, your phone number if you gave one, and your passkeys live with Clerk. Your phone number stays with Clerk only.

We hold the account identifier that links you to your data, together with the copy of your email address described in section 3.1.

7.3Convex (Database and Servers)

Convex is our database and runs our servers. Everything you write in the app, including your profile, diary, ratings, reviews, rankings, lists, planned visits, likes and follows, is stored there.

7.4Bunny (Photo Storage)

Bunny stores your profile photo and cover photo and serves them from its network. Those two photos sit at public web addresses, so anyone who has the address can open the picture.

Bunny also stores up to two photos on each show you log or book, a cover photo for a show that has no poster, and a photo you send with a show you ask us to add.

The photos on your shows are served only through links that expire. The app asks us for a fresh link each time, and we make a link only for someone who is allowed to see the photo.

7.5Expo (App Updates)

Expo delivers app updates. It sees the technical facts that any update service sees, such as which version of the app is installed. It does not see your Account or anything you have written.

7.6Sentry (Crash Reports and App Speed)

Sentry collects crash reports and app speed readings. When the app crashes, it sends a technical report containing what went wrong in the code, the app version, and the device model and system version.

For a share of sessions it also records which screens were opened and how long they took to load. We have set it to leave out your IP address and your username, and it does not see anything you have written.

7.7Apple Maps and Google Maps (Stats Map)

The map on your Stats page is loaded from Apple Maps on an iPhone and from Google Maps on an Android phone. Apple or Google can therefore see that the map was opened and which area of the map it shows.

We do not send Apple or Google your name, your Account or anything you have written.

7.8YouTube (Video Playback)

YouTube plays the videos in the app, in its own player. Section 8 describes what that means.

7.9Firecrawl and the Vercel AI Gateway (Theater Look-Ups)

Firecrawl and the Vercel AI Gateway help us find a theater that we do not have. When you name one, the name, city and state that you typed, and never your name or your Account, are used to search the web and to ask an AI model which theater it is.

7.10AI Model Providers, Exa and SerpApi (Program Scans and Show Requests)

When you scan a program, or tell us about a show that we do not have, we send your photo and the show details you gave us, and never your name or your Account, to AI model providers. They help us identify the show and check its details, and the models may read the photo to extract information. The providers are OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Google, reached through the Vercel AI Gateway.

We also use Exa to search the web, and SerpApi to run Google image search. The details you typed are used to search, and an expiring link to your photo may be sent in order to find the show's official artwork. Section 5 describes further how we use AI.

7.11Vercel (Website Hosting)

Vercel hosts this website, betweenacts.app.

7.12Resend (Waitlist Email)

When we send emails to people on the waitlist, they will go out through Resend, an email delivery service. Section 11 describes the waitlist.

7.13Public Sources for the Shared Catalogue

To build the shared catalogue of shows, news, critic reviews and videos, we also read public sources: Exa, Firecrawl, SerpApi, Google (image search, through SerpApi), The Guardian's API, the YouTube Data API, and AI models reached through the Vercel AI Gateway.

Apart from the program photos and typed show details described in section 7.9 and section 7.10, these sources receive nothing about you.

8.YouTube API Services

8.1YouTube Terms of Service

The videos in the app come from YouTube, through YouTube API Services. By watching them you agree to the YouTube Terms of Service: https://www.youtube.com/t/terms.

8.2The YouTube Player

Each video plays in YouTube's own player, in its privacy-enhanced mode. The player loads from YouTube (Google) as soon as a video page or short opens, so YouTube can see that its player was opened from our app.

A video plays when you press play. A short starts playing on its own when you scroll to it. Once a video plays, YouTube can see that it was played, and it may set cookies or collect data under its own rules. Google's Privacy Policy explains what it does: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

8.3Information We Obtain from YouTube

We use YouTube API Services only to read public facts about each video: its title, description, channel, length and view count. We store those facts, and we refresh or delete them within 30 days. We send YouTube nothing about you.

8.4No Access to Your Google or YouTube Account

We never ask for access to your Google or YouTube account, so there is nothing to connect or revoke.

9.Links to Other Websites

9.1Opening Other Websites

Ticket buttons, news stories, critic reviews and a show's own links open the other website inside the app, in your phone's own browser view (Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android). That website sees your visit as it would in a normal browser, and is subject to its own privacy policy.

9.2Ticket Purchases

If you buy tickets, you buy them from that seller, not from us. We do not see your order, your payment details or anything you type on the seller's website.

10.Photos and Visibility to Other Members

10.1Public and Private Profiles

Your profile is public when you join. You can make it private at any time with the Public profile switch under Account.

A public profile shows other members your username, display name, photos, bio, location, city, favorite shows and when you joined. It also shows your public diary entries, your rankings, your Must See list and your public lists, who you follow and who follows you, and how many shows you have logged.

You can be found in member search, and your rankings are compared with other public members' to show how closely your tastes match.

A private profile closes all of that to everybody else, and keeps you out of member search and taste matches. The one exception is a diary entry that you set to Public, as section 10.2 explains.

10.2Diary Entry Visibility

Each diary entry is either Public or Only me, whatever your profile is set to. A new entry starts from your profile's setting, and the entry's own choice is final.

A public entry, with its review, can appear on the show's page and in feeds under your name, even if your profile is private. An Only me entry hides the entry, the review, the tags and your rating from everybody else.

10.3Information Counted Regardless of Visibility

Two things count even when an entry is Only me.

  • Your rating still counts toward the show's audience score, anonymously. The score carries no names and is shown only once at least five members have rated.
  • The number of shows you have logged includes Only me entries. It is a number only, with no show, date or rating.

10.4Notifications to Other Members

When you follow someone or like their review, they receive a notification with your username.

10.5Information Never Shown to Other Members

The following is never shown to anybody else: your real name, your email address, your phone number, your seat, your planned visits, your notifications, and the video channels you mute.

10.6Cover Photos and Photos Sent with Requests

A photo that you add as a show's cover, or send with a program scan or a show request, is shown only to you. Other members see a standard placeholder until we have the show's official artwork.

10.7Photos on Shows You Logged or Booked

The photos you add to a show that you logged or booked are private: only you see them, unless you choose otherwise.

On a Public diary entry you can switch on Show with my review, which starts off on every new log. Anyone who can read that review in the app then also sees its photos. The photos on a planned visit are never shown.

If you switch it off, or set the entry to Only me, the photos stop being shown straight away.

10.8Expiring Photo Links

Links to your photos expire, so a link copied out of the app stops working within a day.

10.9Reporting and Moderation of Photos

Any member can report a photo shown with a review. A report tells our team which photo it is, who reported it and any reason they gave.

Our team may hide a reported photo. It is then no longer shown with your review, but you still see it in your own diary.

10.10Photo Copy Kept with a Show Request

The photo copy that we keep with a show request is reached only through links that expire. It is seen by our team to help us find the show, and it is deleted 10 days after you send it.

11.This Website and the Waitlist

11.1Waitlist Information

If you join the waitlist on betweenacts.app, we keep your email address, which form you used, and, only if you add them, your first and last name. They are stored in Convex and used to tell you about the app's launch. When we send those emails, they will go out through Resend, an email delivery service.

11.2Protection Against Abuse

To stop the form being flooded, we count sign-ups from each IP address for an hour. Those counts are deleted within a day.

11.3No Advertising or Tracking; Leaving the Waitlist

This website has no ads, no analytics kit and no tracking pixels.

To leave the waitlist, write to support@bryghtideas.com.

12.Data Retention

12.1General Rule

Your data stays while your Account does. When you delete the Account, it goes (section 14). We do not keep a shadow copy of a deleted profile.

12.2Specific Retention Periods

We keep the following, for the following periods:

  • Scans: the photo and what the AI read from it are deleted after 24 hours, unless you keep the photo with your log.
  • Look-ups: what you typed and the runs we found are kept until you delete your Account.
  • Community nights and special events you log: kept in your diary only.
  • Shows you chose not to rank: kept until you delete your Account.
  • Device facts: your phone model, system version, app version, build number, update id and when the app last reported. We keep only the latest.
  • Your agreement: that you agreed to the Terms and Privacy Policy, with the versions and the date.
  • Photo copy sent with a show request: deleted 10 days after you send it.
  • Waitlist emails: kept until you ask us to remove them, and in any case deleted 30 days after the app launches.
  • Sign-up counts by IP address: deleted within a day.
  • Public facts about videos obtained from YouTube: refreshed or deleted within 30 days.

12.3Cleared Notifications

A notification you clear is hidden from you, not erased, until your Account is deleted.

12.4Replaced and Removed Photos

When you replace your profile or cover photo, the old picture is deleted. When you remove a photo from a show that you logged or booked, it is deleted.

12.5Backups

Ordinary database backups may hold a copy for a short while after deletion before they roll over.

13.Your Rights and Choices

13.1Access and Control Within the App

You can see and change almost everything that we hold about you inside the app, and you can delete all of it from Account, then Security.

13.2Requesting a Copy of Your Data

There is no download button yet. To get a copy of your data, write to support@bryghtideas.com and we will send it to you.

13.3Rights Under UK and EU Law

If you are in the UK or the EU, you have the following rights:

  • to see the data we hold about you (access);
  • to have it corrected;
  • to have it deleted;
  • to object to how we use it; and
  • to take a copy of it to use elsewhere (portability).

To use any of them, write to support@bryghtideas.com.

13.4Right to Complain

You can also complain to your local data protection authority, such as the ICO in the UK.

14.Account Deletion

14.1How to Delete Your Account

Open the app, go to Account, then Security, and tap Delete Account at the bottom. Type DELETE to confirm. That is the whole process: there is no form to fill in and nobody to email.

14.2Information Deleted

Everything you wrote is deleted. This includes:

  • your profile (with the copy of your email);
  • your profile and cover photos, the photos on the shows you logged or booked, and any photo you sent with a show request;
  • your diary entries, your ratings and reviews, your rankings, and your lists and Must See shows;
  • your follows in both directions, your taste matches, and your notifications;
  • your planned visits, your look-ups, your scans, and the shows you chose not to rank;
  • the record of your agreement to the Terms and Privacy Policy;
  • your likes and comments, and your muted channels;
  • any feedback you sent (the message, its screenshot and the device facts); and
  • any photo reports you made or that were made about your photos.

It is removed in batches and is normally gone within minutes.

14.3Sign-In Identity

Your sign-in identity is deleted too. The Account at Clerk goes with the data, so the email address and phone number are no longer registered.

14.4Information That Remains

A few things stay. A request you made for a show or theater that we did not carry stays in our catalogue queue as you typed it, tied to an internal account number that no longer leads to a profile. Any photo you sent with it is deleted.

A notification that another member already received, that you followed them or liked their review, keeps your old username as plain text.

The shared catalogue that everybody uses also stays: shows, venues, people, news stories and critic reviews. None of that is yours, and none of it names you once your rows are gone.

14.5Deletion Is Permanent

Deletion cannot be undone. Once it has run there is nothing to restore.

15.Children

15.1Minimum Age

BetweenActs is for people 13 and over and is not directed at children. We do not ask for your age or birth date.

15.2Accounts of Children Under 13

If we learn that an Account belongs to someone under 13, we delete it and everything in it. If you think a child under 13 is using BetweenActs, tell us at support@bryghtideas.com.

16.Security

16.1Sign-In

There is no password. You sign in with a one-time code sent through Clerk, or with a passkey. The key of a passkey never leaves your device.

If you turn on sign-in with Face ID or your fingerprint, your face or fingerprint never leaves your phone. The phone's secure hardware makes a key, and Clerk keeps only the public half of that key, for that one phone. You may turn it off at any time under Account and then Security.

16.2Access to Photos and Personal Details

The photos on your shows are served only through links that expire, and we make a link only for someone who is allowed to see the photo (section 7.4 and section 10.8). The personal details listed in section 10.5 are never shown to other members.

17.International Transfers

17.1Processing in the United States

Bryght Ideas, LLC and most of our Service Providers are in the United States, so your data is processed there. Where UK or EU law asks for safeguards when data moves to the United States, we rely on the safeguards that our providers offer.

18.Changes to This Policy

18.1Updates

If what we collect or who processes it changes, we will update this page and the date at the top of it, and tell you in the app when the change matters.

18.2Paid Memberships

If we start offering paid memberships, this page will say who handles payments before anything can be bought.

19.Contact

19.1Questions and Requests

Any question about your data, including what we hold, how to get a copy and how to delete it, goes to support@bryghtideas.com. A real person reads it.

19.2Operator

BetweenActs is an app by Bryght Ideas, LLC, 2850 North Sheridan Road, Chicago, Illinois 60657, USA.
